“MMKN (ممكن) MEANS IT’S POSSIBLE”
24 years ago, in the year 2000, in the heart of Beirut, the students of a passionate biology teacher, Ghada Feghali, at a prestigious private school “International College” in Lebanon achieved a 100% success rate in the new Brevet exams. Across the street, a public school that uses the same curriculum, had disheartening news - none of their students had passed. This sparked a fire in Ghada, who has a long history of education and volunteering going as far back as the 1970s.
With the principal’s and MEHE’s approval, she rallied her colleagues and started offering reinforcement classes to the public school students. By the end of the year, all public school students passed their exams. The news spread quickly, and soon, principals from several public schools sought Ghada’s help, who turned to the American University of Beirut (AUB) and recruited student volunteers who joined the effort.
By 2010, Ghada and a group of like-minded women decided to found MMKN NGO to continue and expand their efforts in education and community empowerment with a strong resolve to create long lasting positive impact in our society. They named it MMKN, which translates to “It’s Possible” in Arabic. Why? Because we believe that anything is possible when we have the resolve. From a small humble beginning in a neighborhood in Beirut, to impacting hundreds of public schools across Lebanon, with tens of thousands of students and youth from all walks of life, MMKN has proven in the past 14 years its ability to waver strife and continue its path of delivering innovative, native solutions to an increasingly challenging environment.
Since 2019 the situation has pushed MMKN to successfully expand its programs through partnerships and funding, creating a multitude of new initiatives and solutions to help vulnerable students in Lebanon. With that great experience in tow and with a new Board, MMKN decided today to renew its commitment to the future, to our youth, our partners, and ourselves by rethinking and refocusing our work and vision.
